Human Ingenuity

Humans are an ingenious lot.

When this pandemic began, in order to protect ourselves:

  • We closed down businesses that might encourage gatherings

  • We implemented physical distancing requirements to keep us apart

  • We mandated masks when in enclosed public spaces

  • We discouraged interaction and set up a system to get what you wanted through contactless delivery.

Today, I saw an ad for a new device that will check one’s temperature as he enters a building. It is mounted and requires no human interaction.

We cleverly devise countless ways to protect ourselves, to keep our interactions to the bare minimum, to protect ourselves.

Then I see how we behave. I watch how we treat each other, and I wonder why we cannot devise ways to bring us together.

Maybe we aren’t that ingenious, after all.
